As I Learn from You...

Welcome to College for the Neighborhood

In the tenth grade, I was charged, along with my classmates, with presenting a dramatic reading. I chose the poem by Langston Hughes entitled Theme for English B. I admittedly cannot recite it now but one line has always stuck with me: "as I learn from you, I guess you learn from me, although you are older and white and somewhat more free...."

At College for the Neighborhood, we expect students of all ages to engage in the classroom in ways that acknowledge that everyone of us--regardless of age or stage in life--has the ability to both teach and learn from each other. Our four semesters include a bridging curriculum that emphasizes shared exchanges and empowers all participants to share power and grow toward community influence while acknowledging their unique gifts and callings. Internships and work experiences enable students to practice and explore work in the community while discerning how to develop their own voice and work.

The unique facets of College for the Neighborhood are not only its local focus but its commitment to remaining small. We aim to have no more that 150 students in every affiliate institution. We mean to cost less than the Pell Grant. We have partnerships that will allow for crucial career exploration, community advancement, and mutualized mentoring.

We invite you to explore the advantages of College for the Neighborhood and the pathways it provides.
